Do-Not-Play List: Why It's Important and What to Include

Planning your Rhode Island wedding music isn’t just about must-play songs — it’s also about a Do-Not-Play list to avoid tunes or genres you don’t want at your New England celebration.

Do-Not-Play List: Why It's Important and What to Include

When planning your wedding music, you’re probably thinking about your must-play songs — your first dance, favorite throwbacks, and high-energy dance floor anthems. But just as important is your Do-Not-Play list — the songs or genres you don’t want to hear on your big day.

Here’s why having one matters, plus a few examples of what couples commonly leave off the playlist.

Why a Do-Not-Play List Matters

A great DJ will read the room, adjust to the crowd, and keep the energy going. But they’re not mind readers. Sharing your Do-Not-Play list upfront helps your DJ:

  • Avoid music that might be awkward, inappropriate, or tied to a bad memory
  • Respect your personal taste and wedding vibe
  • Prevent unwanted guest requests from sneaking in

It’s one more way to make sure your wedding feels uniquely you — not like someone else’s playlist.

Common Do-Not-Play Requests

Every couple is different, but here are some songs and categories that often show up on Do-Not-Play lists:

  • Line dances like the Cha Cha Slide, Macarena, or Cupid Shuffle (unless specifically requested)
  • Overplayed songs like “Celebration,” “Happy,” or “Blurred Lines”
  • Breakup songs or anything with lyrics that feel off for a wedding
  • Songs from exes’ playlists or that bring up old memories
  • Genres you just don’t like (e.g., country, EDM, heavy metal)

Pro tip: If there are songs your family or guests might expect but you don’t want, flag them in advance.

How to Create Your Do-Not-Play List

  1. Start with the songs that make you cringe — whether it’s personal or just not your taste.
  2. Think about your guest mix — Are there generational songs you don’t want on the playlist?
  3. Check popular wedding lists — and cross out anything that doesn’t feel right for your style.
  4. Be honest with your DJ — We’re not here to judge! We want your night to be 100% your vibe.
